There is a Magic to Delivering A Great TEDx Speech

Speaking like TED is an art. TED and TEDx speakers, before delivering their speeches, undergo heavy speech and performance training in order to deliver a chat of a lifetime. Some of the most common tips, including writing a script, memorizing the words, slides (if any), the clicks, and continuos rehearsal are necessities. However, there is so much more to delivering great TED speeches than the former. Here are three tips for delivering a great TEDx talk.

  1. Be sure to practice your speech on stage three days prior to the performance: No matter how much you have practiced your speech, delivering a speech on stage without getting to know the area you can have to work with, can be disastrous. As an old footballer once said, “Practice is practice — Game is game.” Take this advice very seriously. Practice your talk multiple times on stage before delivering the actual talk three days prior to the performance.
  2. Get to know the event coordinators: Trust me, you will need them. TEDx talks are organized events but the “making” of a TED event isn’t. Why? Because putting together any event, regardless of whether the event is a TED/TEDx event or not is quite chaotic. Therefore, getting to know your event organizers well can save you a lot of time especially in the preparation phase. Make their lives easier by understanding what they need to accomplish and getting out of the way when they are too busy. These tricks can help you gain stage access which will help you to deliver a much better speech.
  3. Hire a coach: The fact that your speech will be professionally (or semi-professionally) recorded and be available for viewing on youtube as long as google exists, can be a quite intimidating reality. When I delivered my TEDx talk, I worked with a coach from broadway who shared with me his secrets of stage success. I have to tell you that the time and effort I’ve spent with my coach transformed the way I see the art of public speaking. Work with a professional who has done it. You are going to need it.

Speaking like TED isn’t an easy task but you can do it. These former tips were precisely the tips I’ve used to deliver my speech and man they have paid off. I bet they could pay off big for you as well.
