“Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them” (James 4:13-17).
The reality is that we can’t even start to guess how much hair we have on our own heads. Trying to plan for what will happen to you or your business two years from today is literally madness. Without being God’s will, I emphasize, our predictions are merely self-centered mad guesses. Only by acknowledging that the Lord is in control that we start our journey towards true wisdom. The former opens the door to potentially deeper questions of true value such as “why do we go to war?” or “Why do brothers and sisters complain against one another when they shouldn’t?” God knows it all. We don’t.
We are to “submit to God and resit the devil” (James 4:7). Don’t forget to “humble yourselves before the Lord and He will exalt you” (James 4:10). In everything ask, “If it is the Lord’s will” and life will then be what it was intended to be from the beginning. A perfect relationship between man and God. God sets the tone, we follow. There is no technology that will ever change that.
