Techno Moderation Releases Frazzle

If you decide to work like a maniac, or is being asked to work 70 hours a week without rest and make absurd deadlines with little resources, you will undeniably, sooner or later, break down. There is just no way that the human brain can handle this unhealthy combination of circumstances without resulting in Frazzle which is a fancy name for being in the state of constant stress, completely exhausted. The consequence? You work less not more because one just can’t physiologically focus on the task at hand as well, even when using technology.

So why are we still celebrating that folks work 70 hours a week and premium them for their robotic and unhealthy work behaviors? Well, this is because human beings today are robotic in nature and are in fact in the midst of what I call the human robot syndrome, a condition developed by the excessive exposure and frequency of computer use. This is my primary answer. The other reason is because we have created what I call the “Super Hero” effect which premiums this ridiculous idea that more hours at work equals being a better employee.

If you work 70 hours a week, stop! Nobody should be working like that. If you hear from your employer that if you don’t work like a maniac every day you are a poor employee — Look for another job. If all the jobs you get require that you behave in such manner, change your career. Your health is worth much more than the income you bring in from working like a mad man. Don’t be emotional about it, be logical. Don’t let your emotions control you. It is more important to be attentive than to be emotional, sometimes.  In fact, Daniel Goleman once said, Emotions take over attention.”

Performance decreases whenever a subject reaches low or ultra high levels of brain activity. Too much cortisol or too much adrenaline is in fact detrimental to performance. Ensuring that you take breaks once in a while and get away from that computer screen that hunts your life so much in the modern era of technology, can do you good. Be rebellious! Be different!
